I highly discourage anyone from ordering a Blurb layflat book. Blurb's quality is highly inconsistent which disappoints me since I have their Flickr discount and know the BookWright software well. When I say that Blurb's quality is poor, I am referring to various elements: Their alignment on covers and pages. The material wrapping around the spine is not tight. The first and last pages of the book (the pages that come into contact with the machinery as the chunk of pages in being cut) often have scratches in the color. Blurb is willing to redo the job if you are unsatisfied, but they will require you to submit all sorts of photos of measurements and pages against white surfaces. When you finally receive the redo, often it is no better. When printing in b/w, keep in mind that Blurb uses different quality of processing for the cover so that image may have a more blue or green tone. Having said all that, the printer in Blurb's Nederlands office has much higher quality control

I'm a graphic designer, so I do print every day. I have a local printer (France) who produces some pretty crazy print, for magazines, flyers, etc. Every time I receive a print, I'm blown away by the print quality, which is super-precise (chroma, and a "print screen" almost as good as an inkjet, and more "crispy" details!). The only hitch is that I can't get super-competitive prices for 1 copy... otherwise, I think I'd only work with the local printer! Honestly: my wish would be for magazines like Blurb to migrate to this type of quality: it would be a game-changer for standard photoBooks. Question worth asking: has anyone here tried a photo book with EcoTank-type printers (not necessarily the $1,000 Epson)? Is the printing precision sufficient for photos?
